hmmm?

Maybe I should stop using my tumblr.  Na is almost here and since the majority of my posts are countdowns for that…what will I post afterwards besides pictures (and even those will be going elsewhere)?

mon pauvre père

My graduation party plans are coming along nicely. We drove past the pavilions where the party will be held and it’s beautiful. Let’s just pray the weather cooperates. Now we’re figuring out more “important” details such as….should we use the drinking fountain water or get bottled water for the party? Peanut butter and jelly or Subway?

My poor Dad, the ever-frugal father, thinks drinking fountains and peanut butter and jelly would be sufficient. My mother and I think otherwise. He reminds me of Steve Martin in Father of the Bride when he pokes fun at Hank and Frank - the French wedding planners (names are supposed to sound like “Honk” and “Fronk”):

[insert French accent]

“I’ll take the chiper (cheaper) chicken!”

Oh brother…I can’t even begin to imagine what my wedding will be like!

Where has the time…gone?

For 18 years, we’ve been friends. We’ve done everything together: homeschool field trips, traveling, singing, talking, dancing, going to church together, celebrating birthdays, laughing with our siblings, playing silly games…you name it. Abbi and I know each other very, very well. We’ve even been separated by thousands and thousands of miles sometimes (she used to live in China several years ago), but our friendship is still goin’ strong. Now we’re both about to finish high school. High school. 12 years of homeschool. Where has the time gone?

The best picture book

This book (The Most Beautiful Villages of the Loire) is next on my list to buy. For those of you who don’t know, Loire is a river that runs east to west in central France. It is home to many picturesque villages and cities (such as Orleans, Nantes, Tours and Blois) that are filled with enchanting chateaus, gardens and vineyards. I found it fascinating that many of the chateaus dotting the region have been standing since the 12th century - something you can’t see here. Whenever I go to France (I hope to sometime), I’m definitely going to do some sightseeing in this area :)

Notable Quotable

I found this comical quote by GK Chesterton in his essay, A Piece of Chalk.

“Once I planned to write a book of poems entirely about the things in my pocket. But I found it would be too long and the age of the great epics is past.”

In 30 days, I’ll drive to the airport, check my luggage and then board a plane. I’ll sit in the plane and be bored until I land. I’ll pick up my luggage and meet my blog-land friends. We’ll drop our luggage off. Then….

…we’ll sign in for….

American Idol

I don’t even watch the show, but it’s impossible to miss all the news surrounding the Indian singer Sanjaya Malakar. I saw a small snippet of him singing and I’ll admit, his music is interesting but his styles are quite humorous and hilarious (I don’t endorse them though). For some strange reason, I was kind of hoping he’d win but he was voted out.

Oh well. At least he’s goin’ to the White House for dinner. Not many get that kind of invite!

Quotable

I found this interesting quote from The Norton Anothology of English Literature.

New Year’s Eve by Charles Lamb:

“The elders, with whom I was brought up, were of a character not likely to let slip the sacred observance of any old institution; and the ringing out of the old year was kept by them with circumstances of peculiar ceremony. —In those days the sound of those midnight chimes, though it seemed to raise hilarity all around me, never failed to bring a train of pensive imagery into my fancy. Yet I then scarce conceived what it meant, or thought of it as a reckoning that concerned me. Not childhood alone, but the young man till thirty, never feels practically that he is mortal. He knows it indeed, and, if need were, he could preach a homily on the fragility of life; but he brings it not home to himself, anymore than is a hot June we can appropriate our imagination to freezing days of December.” (page 594)
Edit :: I realized this quote may seem rather weird or unusual to many of you. But I found it interesting, especially the excerpt I emphasized about man thinking he’s mortal. Somehow, that seems so true.
